The Fiji Islands, an archipelago of over 330 islands in the South Pacific, are a relatively unspoiled tropical paradise set in stunning deep blue waters with fine coastal scenery, colourful marketplaces, and a tourism industry geared for every class of visitor from backpacker to luxury.

Nadi, nearby the airport, is great for shopping as is Suva, but Fiji’s rural areas have many tradional villages, sugar cane is the most important cash crop. The nearby island of Beqa has great diving and is home to the legendary firewalkers. Fiji’s capital, Suva, with its colonial feel, is a shopping and dining destination, with nightclubs and markets.

While few of the outer islands are inhabited, Ovalau, was once Fiji's old capital, and the Kadavu Group with its 50km-long Astrolabe Reef attracts divers, as do the northern islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni.

Accommodation in Fiji

The Maravu Plantation Beach Resort and Spa on Taveuni has 21 well-appointed thatched roof cottages and the Namale Resort and Spa has only 16 bures set on 325 acres. On Denarau Island, joined to Fiji’s mainland, Viti Levu, by a causeway, the Sheraton Fiji offers top class accommodation. Myola Plantation Villa, just 45 minute’s drive from the airport is Fiji's newest luxury retreat.

Dining and nightlife

One of Nadi’s most popular nightspots is Ed's Bar with its three bars, live bands, and Fijian cuisine served at its Seafood Grill Restaurant. Jack's Restaurant serves international cuisine and it perfect for seafood or grain-fed beef for just a casual lunch or an intimate candlelit dinner. Tu's Place is perfect for a big breakfast, while the Zig Zag Cafe at Nadi features delicious Fijian-grown coffee and fresh juices.

Shopping in Fiji

Jack's of Fiji sells traditional handicrafts, souvenirs, tapa, leather goods, surfwear, and precious stones, bula shirts with bright patterns and pretty sulu wraps, while Aladdin's Cave specialises in exotic jewellery and arts and crafts. The large South Seas Treasures emporium has unusual ornaments and an array of Balinese and Javanese carvings. Anita on Main Street in Nadi has gold jewellery made in India and Singapore and pearl necklaces and earrings. Prouds sells lustrous black pearls from Savusavu.

Fiji Attractions

With the tropical waters of the Fijian islands being such a major attraction, be sure to take one of Captain Cook Cruises sailing day trips on the historic tall ship, Brigantine Ra Marama. Game fishing enthusiasts can enjoy full and half-day expeditions, with Sea Fiji, and scuba divers will find any number of operators ready to take them to perfect dive locations.

The a unique botanical experience head for the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, where acres of orchids and flowering plants are set in a shady mountain valley.
